Curriculum at Radcliffe Riverside ...

National Curriculum Logo

At Radcliffe Riverside we aim to build upon the strong foundation laid at our feeder primary schools.

At Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9) students will follow the National Curriculum. The importance of Technology will be emphasised throughout all the subjects the students will study.

At Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11) students follow the core National Curriculum entitlement and in addition are able to choose from a number of option subjects to include in their GCSE course. For more information on specific KS4 options please follow the links at the bottom of this page.

All students have their curriculum enhanced by :

Examinations

We have a policy of entering all students at examination level in the subjects studied at Key Stage 4. It is our belief that this policy is a recognition of the individual worth of every student on roll. Parents are invited into school at the appropriate time to discuss their child's examination entries.

Sex Education

Sex Education is taught as an aspect of Health Education in PHSE lessons and in Science. Specialist outside speakers are invited into school to talk to students through the PHSE programme which deals with personal relationships in preparation for adulthood.

Religious Studies and Collective Worship

Religious Studies is a core subject throughout the school. The study of Christianity and other major world religions, moral and religious issues are delivered through the Religious Studies curriculum and the PHSE programme. Religious Studies is also offered as a GCSE option.

Assemblies are held on a daily basis.

Parents wishing to exercise their right to withdraw their children from religious worship and sex education elements of the curriculum should notify the Headteacher in writing.

THE EXTENDED CURRICULUM

Careers Education

Careers Education begins through the PHSE programme in Year 7. In Year 9, when option choices have to be made, it consists of individual and group counselling, visits, visiting speakers and simulated interviews. In addition, every student has the opportunity to participate in work experience in Upper School, in Year 8 there is a Work Shadowing Day and in Year 9 an Industry Day. Further Education Links

We have very close links with Bury College and Holy Cross Sixth Form College. Increasingly large numbers of our students go on to A level and other further education courses. In partnership with Bury College the school has been able to provide adult education courses in ICT. It is hoped that this new initiative will be extended to include several additional subjects. The school is a member of Bolton and Bury Chamber of Commerce in order to strengthen and develop our existing school-industry links.

Learning Support

Our Learning Support Department ensures that all students with Special Needs have access to the National Curriculum and are fully integrated. If a child has a Special Need, be it Specific Learning Difficulties, Sight Impairment or in need of short term support for any reason, our qualified staff are here to help. The Coney Green site is particularly user friendly for the physically challenged, with wide corridors and specially designed toilet facilities. For this reason it is designated by the LEA for children who are physically challenged and who are able to follow the National Curriculum.

Primary Liaison

We have strong and well established links with all local primary schools. This ensures that transition from Year 6 into our school is a much less daunting prospect for young children. We organise a New Intake Day and Evening for all our new Year 7 students and their parents to visit the school.
